WEETUUKIRE IS ON

The Acting Managing Director of Buganda Land Board Mr. Kizito Bashir Juma has emphasized that BLB will go ahead with its WEETUUKIRE campaign which requires all people who acquired  both freehold and lease hold  titles on the Kabaka’s land between 1967 and 2013  to have their titles regularized  and validated so that their tenancy is secured. Speaking to staff members of Buganda Land Board during their monthly MD’s tea meeting at Masengere building on Friday 26 February 2016, Mr.Kizito stressed that  BLB management will continue to make awareness and sensitize  Kabaka’s subjects about the advantages of having their land titles from either Uganda land Commission or District Land Boards validated for their own good. He challenged all BLB staff in all the branches to be ambassadors of WEETUUKIRE because of the numerous benefits associated with it.    In a  separate interview the Head of Legal Services in Buganda Land Board Mr. Barnabas  Ndawula stressed that WEETUUKIRE campaign aims at having affected persons to be positively recognized as the  title holders and to that effect be identified, establish actual acreage, user and duration of leases, and most importantly  changing the lessor to the current controlling authority which is Buganda Land Board. Ndawula  emphasizes  that this exercise aims at stabilizing the land market by ensuring that  persons interested in buying parcels of land that have such leases are  protected because they would have a simple and fast way of authenticating ownership, acreage and occupancy through Buganda Land Board. This scheme intends to assist title holders who have complaints that they are  unable to enjoy possession of their land owing to mushrooming of squatters who allege that it is Kabaka’s land. Many of these have titles issued by ULC and it is an opportunity for them to present them to BLB so that they can be helped to handle the issue of squatters in a peaceful and mutually beneficial manner. Ndawula adds that for security of tenure, Banks and financial institutions shall only accept land titles which are validated by Buganda Land Board.

It should be noted that the Central   Government under the Obote I Republican   constitution of 1967 confiscated Buganda Kingdom assets of which land was the largest. WEETUUKIRE campaign is therefore intended to ensure that all tenants on Kabaka’s land enjoy peaceful and economically sustainable use of the land they occupy
